Why Kinu Grinders?

More than 25 years ago, dentist Dr. Eduard Biernatek founded Graef GmbH to develop and manufacture dental instruments. Shortly thereafter, the company expanded into the development and manufacture of spice and coffee grinders for branding and sale by other companies. To mark its 25th anniversary, the company decided to launch a line of grinders under its own Kinu brand. In September 2016, Kinu launched a line of three grinders.

In 2016, the company launched its first proprietary line of grinders under the Kinu brand. The three models, called M68, M47, and M38, were named after the diameters of their grinding discs. All three models were single-dose grinders with conical steel burrs. The burrs were sourced from an Italian company and modified by Kinu for use in a unique alignment system.

After a fire broke out at one of the company's factories in Romania at the end of 2018, the company's production capacity was severely limited, and the factory had to be rebuilt. Nevertheless, in June 2019, just six months after the fire, Kinu launched the M47 Phoenix, an extension of the M47 series. This model was similar in design to the classic M47, but featured some components made of plastic instead of steel, such as the ground coffee container. In addition, the all-metal construction based on the Morse taper principle was replaced with a high-precision axis alignment. This made it possible to maintain the high quality of Kinu grinders while offering the M4 Phoenix at a slightly lower price, making it accessible to many coffee lovers.

With the M47 grinder series, Kinu has launched professional hand grinders for everyday use. It consists of three models: the M47 Classic, the M47 Phoenix, and the M47 Simplicity.

The first Kinu M47 Classic was released in 2016. The Classic is the most expensive model in the series because it doesn't use plastic. This was followed in 2019 by the M47 Phoenix and the M47 Simplicity. The Simplicity is an intermediate model between the Classic and the Phoenix.

All M47 models are made of high-quality stainless steel and equipped with 47 mm Black Fusion-treated steel burrs. Both the Classic and the Simplicity feature a unique all-metal construction based on the Morse taper principle, which ensures the burrs center themselves automatically. The Phoenix, on the other hand, features high-precision axis alignment. What sets the M47 Classic apart from the other two models is its stainless steel collection container with its 11 magnets. In the M47 Phoenix and the M47 Simplicity, this container is made of food-safe plastic. For optimal handling, the Simplicity and the Classic are equipped with a practical thumb stop, while the Phoenix has a silicone grip.
